Dental Restorations (Fillings)

A dental restoration or dental filling is a dental restorative material used artificially to restore the function, integrity and morphology of missing tooth structure. The structural loss typically results from caries or external trauma. It is also lost intentionally during tooth preparation to improve the aesthetics or the physical integrity of the intended restorative material.

Dental cement materials used to affix dental restorations and to fill cavities  are called dental restorative material.

A decayed tooth can be restored using a variety of materials all depending on what kind of cavity is present, on which tooth the cavity is present , on which surface of the concerned tooth the decay is present.

Usually the teeth are divided as anterior and posterior teeth.

All cavities occurring on the anterior teeth are filled using a tooth colored composite restorative material that looks and feels like the tooth.

Posterior teeth can be filled with a variety of restorative materials depending on the extent of decay and patient preference.

  • Silver fillings ( Amalgam )
  • Composite Fillings
  • Glass Ionomer Fillings ( Cement FIlings)

Out of  all the materials available the most preferred and aesthetic materials remain the composite resin materials. These materials mould well, have good strength and resemble the tooth color and texture.

COMPOSITES

Composites are a plastic-like material in the resin family used to fill teeth. The traditional composite resins are made up of a large amount of inorganic filler particles bound by an organic polymer matrix or mesh. The newer generation composites have superior properties which include higher strength, hardness, elasticity, abrasion resistance and high polishability to make the restoration appear lifelike. Uses include cosmetic, filling cavities, correcting size, colour and shapes of teeth. They can be used in front as well as back teeth.

    WHY DO TEETH DECAY ?

Decay of tooth enamel is caused by certain types of Acid-Producing bacteria that attack the tooth enamel on the tooth surface. Once the enamel surface is broken, the tooth can no longer repair itself.

Continuing decay undermines the inner tooth and attacks the nerve, causing tooth ache.

    HEALTHY  TEETH ARE BEAUTIFUL TEETH

You can help prevent tooth decay by taking steps to limit bacteria on your teeth:

    1. Brush and Floss daily

Consult your dentist for his or her recommendations for the best tooth paste and type of tooth brush for your mouth.

    2. Eat  Healthy Food, Especially whole grains, Vegetables, Fruits and Foods that are low in saturated fats and sodium.

    3. Avoid foods that contain a lot of sugar, especially sticky, sweet foods such as caramels and hard candies since the longer sugar stays in contact with your teeth, the more damage it can do.
