Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: What is Dentistry?

A: The science concerned with the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases of the teeth, gums, and related structures of the mouth and including the repair or replacement of defective teeth.

Q: What is a Dental Filling/ Restoration?

A: A filling is a material that your dentist uses to fill a cavity after he or she removes any tooth decay.

Q: What is Cosmetic Dentistry?

A: Cosmetic dentistry is a discipline within dentistry in which the primary focus is the modification of appearance of a patient's oral cavity and surrounding structures, in conjunction with the prevention and treatment of organic, structural, or functional oral disease. Through cosmetic dentistry, the appearance of the mouth can be altered to more closely match the patient's subjective concept of what is visually pleasing.Today's common cosmetic dental treatment options include:Whitening, or tooth bleaching is the most commonly prescribed cosmetic dental procedure. While many whitening options are now available, dentist-supervised treatments remain the recommended procedures for lightening discolored teeth

Enamel shaping removes parts of the contouring enamel to improve the appearance of the tooth. It may be used to correct a very small chip. The removed enamel is irreplaceable. It is also known as enameloplasty, odontoplasty, recontouring, reshaping, slenderizing, and stripping.

Bonding is an option for chipped or cracked teeth. It is a process in which an enamel-like dental composite material is applied to a tooth's surface, sculpted into shape, hardened, and then polished.

Veneers, ultra-thin, custom-made laminates that are bonded directly to the teeth, are an increasingly popular procedure. They are an option for closing gaps or disguising discolored teeth that did not respond well to whitening procedures

Q: I need a denture : what are my options?

A:Conventional removable partial dentures

Cast Partial Dentures

Conventional over-denture

 Implant over-denture

 Immediate dentures

Q: What are Dental Implants?

A: A dental implant is a small titanium cylinder, which is gently placed in the jawbone, to replace the root of the missing tooth and to restore the function of chewing and the pleasing smile associated with natural teeth.

Q: Would age be a deterrent to having Dental Implants placed?

A: No, but  health could be a deterrent. Many people seventy or eighty years of age are a better surgical risk than someone years younger who is in poor health. Older people are more likely to need implants because they have lost more teeth and have lost more bony ridge. If you are healthy enough to have a tooth extracted, you're probably healthy enough to receive dental implants.

Q. What are wisdom teeth? Why do so many people talk about them and suffer from them?

A. Wisdom teeth are the third and final set of molars that most people get in their late teens or early twenties. Sometimes these teeth can be a valuable asset to the mouth when healthy and properly aligned, but more often, they are misaligned and require removal. Wisdom teeth present potential problems when they are misaligned – they can position themselves horizontally, be angled toward or away from the second molars or be angled inward or outward. Poor alignment of wisdom teeth can crowd or damage adjacent teeth, the jawbone, or nerves. Wisdom teeth that lean toward the second molars make those teeth more vulnerable to decay by entrapping plaque and debris. In addition, wisdom teeth can be entrapped completely within the soft tissue and/or the jawbone or only partially break through or erupt through the gum.

Q: Is Bleaching Harmful for the teeth?

A: If Bleaching is done under the supervision of a qualified dental surgeon it is not harmful.

Q: Is it necessary to replace missing teeth?

A: Yes, it is necessary to replace missing teeth ( Except wisdom teeth) If the extracted teeth are not replaced it will lead to movement of the teeth adjacent to the extraction site resulting in space formation between these teeth.

Prolonged delay in replacing will lead to over eruption of the tooth from the opposite arch, hence making replacement of the missing tooth more difficult.

Q: Do i need to visit the dentist regularly for check ups and how often?

A: Most people visit their dentist only when they are in dental pain, but usuallly its too late by then. The best the dentist can do then is a roota canal or extraction which could have been avoided if the patient had come earlier for one of his/ her regular checkups.

Usually one should visit the dentist once in 6 months. Unless indicated otherwise.
